Israel Castillo was born in Mexico City, from a family of indigenous Zapotec origins of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec (southern Mexico).
After studying Double bass he decided to specialize in the viola da gamba. He began his studies with the gambist Gabriela Villa-Walls and flutist MariaDiez-Canedo in the UNAM (Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico). He lived for a short period in New Zealand where he received private lessons with Margaret Cooke. He studied then a masters degree with Anneke Pols, Wieland Kuijken and Philippe Pierlot in the Koninjklijk conservatorium in The Hague.
He has participated in many projects under the direction of renown musicians like: Michael Chance, Joseph Cabre, Mike Fentross, Patrick Ayrton and Christina Pluhar.
As a chamber musician he has also performed widely. As sfor example duo concerts with his former teacher Wieland Kuijken and several solo concerts in Norway, Germany, Mexico, New Zealand and the Netherlands.
Israel is frequently invited to participate in the Netherlands Passion season, playing the solo gamba in the arias of the Mathew and Johannes passion by Bach.
He participated in the recording of “la Rappresentatione de Anima e di corpo” by Cavallieri with “La Arpeggiatta”directed by Christina Pluhar. Presenting the material in the Festival VanVlandereen and Oude Muziek Festival in the Benelux.
He is also interested in Mexican popular music and the similitude of these music and The 17th century Italian baroque music. In this Field he has recorded a Cd with the Renown group of son Jarocho: Son de Madera called Las Orquestas del Dia.
